Maryland Tech Council Launches Data Center Alliance of Maryland to Help Harness Economic and Fiscal Contributions of Data Center Industry

  • Calvert County’s Julie Oberg and Rodgers Consulting Inc.’s Dusty Rood Named Co-Chairs

  • Alliance Aims to Help Educate Maryland on Industry That Plans $500+ Billion in U.S. Investments

In a move to support Maryland’s economic growth, expand the state’s tax base, and secure the state’s position as an innovation leader, the Maryland Tech Council (MTC) today launched the Data Center Alliance of Maryland (DCA-MD), a coalition of partners dedicated to informing and educating Marylanders on the potential contributions of data center industry growth in the state.

DCA-MD launches at a pivotal moment for the state. Maryland ranks 40th in the nation in five-year job growth and projects a $3 billion budget deficit by Fiscal Year 2030. The U.S. technology industry is expected to invest more than $500 billion in AI and data center infrastructure by 2030, presenting Maryland an opportunity to strengthen its economy and budget by supporting data center industry investment and job growth.

DCA-MD aims to improve and align public policies to advance a dynamic data center industry in the state, educate Marylanders on the economic and fiscal contributions of data center development, and track industry innovations and advise stakeholders on best practices. The alliance will also work to answer common questions residents have about data center siting, construction, and operation in their communities.

DCA-MD’s co-chairs are Julie Oberg, Director of Economic Development for Calvert County, and Dusty Rood, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rodgers Consulting, Inc. The co-chairs are establishing a steering committee to inform the coalition’s efforts. To be considered for a position, apply at this link: www.mdtechcouncil.com/data-center-alliance-of-maryland

“Data centers are more than just how we connect our homes and businesses—they are an opportunity to strengthen Maryland’s economy and tax base,” said Kelly Schulz, Chief Executive Officer of the Maryland Tech Council. “With Julie and Dusty’s leadership, the Data Center Alliance of Maryland will educate and inform how thoughtful data center development can strengthen our workforce, provide new tax revenue for state and local budgets, and ensure Maryland remains an undisputed innovation leader.”

A recent MTC study found that a typical data center project in Maryland, approximately 800,000 square feet, would:

  • Support 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and $775 million in economic activity and generate approximately $18 million in state tax revenues during construction, alongside substantial local tax revenues.
  • Once operational, the data center would support nearly 500 permanent jobs and generate $14 million in state tax revenue annually, plus substantial local tax revenues.
