Maryland Tech Council Applauds New National Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Initiative

Maryland is Positioned as a National Leader in Bio Innovation

Frederick, MD – (September 15, 2022) – The Maryland Tech Council, the largest technology and life sciences trade association in the state, applauds the Biden Administration for creating the National Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Initiative this week to support life sciences innovation, create good-paying jobs, and strengthen domestic supply chains.

The National Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Initiative seeks to grow the domestic biomanufacturing capacity, drive research and development (R&D) to solve national and global challenges, train a diverse skilled workforce, and invest in medical breakthroughs. The initiative includes $1 billion in domestic biomanufacturing infrastructure investments and $40 million to expand biomanufacturing for active pharmaceutical ingredients, antibiotics, and key starting materials needed to produce essential medications and respond to pandemics.

Marty Rosendale, CEO of the Maryland Tech Council, issued the following statement:

“Maryland is uniquely positioned to lead America’s biotech and biomanufacturing revolution. Our life sciences manufacturing sector has expanded at one of the fastest rates nationwide and has significant potential for further growth. Maryland hosts the world’s largest cell therapy manufacturing facility and leads the world in adult stem cell production and vaccine research and development. With more than 54,000 life sciences workers in the state, the Baltimore-Washington corridor is ranked #2 for life sciences research talent in the nation.

“To support biotech and biomanufacturing workforce growth, the Maryland Tech Council this year launched Biohub Maryland, a first of its kind initiative to meet the workforce development needs of Maryland’s life sciences employers. Biohub Maryland will grow our life science workforce by engaging talent from diverse educational backgrounds and demonstrating the immense value of a biotech career in Maryland.

“With the world-class R&D assets, talent pipeline, and innovation resources we have in Maryland, our industry welcomes this new federal initiative and is committed to the continued equitable growth of life sciences in Maryland.”
