Last month, we stopped by Fina Biosolutions and caught up with Founder, CEO and Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Andrew Lees.

Fina Biosolutions is a privately held company providing technology, laboratory and consulting services in the field of conjugate vaccines and has been an active MTC member for five years. Chemistry developed by Fina Biosolutions’ scientists is used by MTC members, GSK and Pfizer, among others.

Since our visit, Fina Biosolutions LLC announced it had reached an agreement with PATH, a global organization focused on solving some of the world’s most pressing health challenges, under which PATH will provide funding and technical support for the clinical manufacture of FinaBio’s CRM197, known commercially as EcoCRM®.  “This agreement will allow us to support the development of urgently needed vaccines,” Mark Alderson, director of PATH’s pneumococcus, meningitis, and group B Streptococcus projects said. “It’s just one example of how public-private partnerships can save lives and foster commercial development at the same time.” Read more here.

Advocacy Update

Government Affairs Bootcamp Recap

To ensure leaders of organizations that make up the Maryland Tech Council have tools and resources they need to be effective advocates for our industry, MTC hosted Government Affairs Bootcamps for life sciences and technology company executives to learn how to work within the legislative process to strengthen the business ecosystem and defend innovation.
Speakers discussed the basics of advocacy and lobbying to help leaders formulate a strategy around the kinds of policies CEOs would like enacted in Annapolis and Washington, D.C., especially within the life sciences and technology industries. These sessions engaged leaders on the fundamentals of how to be an effective advocate and walk through different ways to tell your story that impact policymakers, including providing testimony, meeting with legislators in person, and more. The session also discussed specific legislative priorities and include a post-2018-election update and analysis.

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October Marks the 15th Annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Monthoct-is-ncsam-twitter-v3

Since 2004, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) has represented a collaborative effort between government, nonprofit and industry to ensure that all Americans have the information they need to stay safer and more secure online. Co-led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), NCSAM has grown exponentially – reaching consumers and organizations nationwide and encouraging all internet users to be #CyberAware.

For the third year, MTC is a Champion of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2018. As a part of NCSAM efforts, MTC shared and promoted the awareness of online safety and privacy through weekly themes:

Week 1: Oct. 1–5: Make Your Home a Haven for Online Safety

Week 1 will underscore basic cybersecurity essentials the entire family can deploy to protect their homes against cyber threats.

Week 2: Oct. 8–12: Millions of Rewarding Jobs: Educating for a Career in Cybersecurity

Week 2 will address ways to motivate parents, teachers and counselors to learn more about the field and how to best inspire students and others to seek highly fulfilling cybersecurity careers.

Week 3: Oct. 15–19: It’s Everyone’s Job to Ensure Online Safety at Work

Week 3 will focus on cybersecurity workforce education, training and awareness while emphasizing risk management, resistance and resilience. NCSA’s CyberSecure My Business will shed light on how small and medium-sized businesses can protect themselves, their employees and their customers against the most prevalent threats.

Week 4: Oct. 22–26: Safeguarding the Nation’s Critical Infrastructure

Week 4 will emphasize the importance of securing our critical infrastructure and highlight the roles the public can play in keeping it safe. In addition, it will lead the transition into November’s Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience Month, which is spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
